Are you looking for the best archery bag targets?best archery bag targets

Asking “what are the best archery bag targets”, is really asking, “what archery target will last the longest, while I destroy it with arrows!”

The design of an arrow flying at speeds upward of 300fts means that it is going to easily tear through the target material as it is coming to a stop. Although the target area destroyed is only the size of your arrow, do it 500 times and there may not be much target archery bag targets

These pictures show what happens with low quality targets. I laughed when I read the one that says “great for compounds or crossbows!” It sure looks like it.  These pics are from a post by David Lain.

Since you are tearing up your target every time you shoot, doesn’t it make sense to just buy the cheapest target you can find? Sadly, no. Not all targets are created equal and a cheap targets just won’t work. (Perhaps for children) Most cheap targets can’t stop arrows with the flight speed of modern compound bows. That means you will be shooting through the target right off the bat. If you did find one that would stop your arrows, chances are good that you will destroy the target so quickly that you won’t save money in the long run.

Good target manufactures spend countless hours finding the best material and design to not only stop arrows, but also to last longer while they are falling apart. In this post we will look at a few of the best rated target bags which archers can use while practicing with field points. These targets are manufactured by the biggest and most well known names in the business and if you are serious about archery, they are definitely worth owning.

Morrell YJ-350

  • 100% Weatherproof
  • 2 Shooting Sides, 10 Bullseyes
  • Designed to stop speeds of 350 FPS
  • E-Z Tote Carrying Handle
  • MLDD (Multi-Layered Density Design)
  • X-Tended Life Target
  • IFS Technology
  • Built Extremely Tough

As a long time user of Morrell Yellow Jacket targets, I can confidently say Morrell makes quality stuff. You will notice “Yellow Jacket” line of targets has a lot of different models.  I guess they knew when they developed a good design and decided to offer it in as many models as they could. There are a few differences in the Yellow Jack models that I will point out going through them but overall every model they make has high ratings.

I notice when writing this post that Morrell uses a lot of description terms for targets (see list above) but I could not find any further explanation of what the terms mean. For instance “X-Tended life target” What does that mean? Most of the terms are just clever ways of saying normal things like, “E-Z Tote Carrying Handle.” Don’t try and church it up, it’s just a handle.

I talked with a Morrell rep about some of the terms to find out what they are. The MLDD indicates that the target is made of layers inside. This is really what you want regardless of what brand or type of target you buy. Compressed or dense layers help not only to stop the arrow but also keep the insides intact longer, since they are self contained.  A bag target that is just stuffed with something won’t last very long. The layers will also help keep the target shape.

The major issue with most targets is that the more you destroy the outside material, the less it is able to hold in the inside. Morrell wisely addressed this with what they call X-Tended life targets. This simply means that Morrell offers replacement covers for the target. It may not sound like much, but putting on a new cover will greatly extend the life of your target.

The last cryptic target description is IFS Technology, which stands for Internal Frame System. An internal frame for a bag target is a big plus for maintaining its shape. It does come at a price however, as a frame makes for a much heavier target (30 lbs.) which is something to consider for mobility.

Hurricane H- Series

  • High Visibility Aiming Points
  • Off-Center deer vitals
  • Tri-Core Technology
  • Heavy-Duty Handle

Field Logic is another big name in the archery target business. In addition to their extremely popular Block Broadhead targets, they also make field point target bags.

Although I used the Block targets for many years, I’ve never purchased any of their bag targets. But as I write this during another Montana snow storm, I can see my neighbor’s Hurricane bag target 80 yards out. (It’s half covered with snow and after this storm, it will be completely covered!) Over the years I’ve watched my neighbor put countless arrows into that target and I would not hesitate to buy one.

High visibility aiming points: Hurricane targets feature highly visible shooting “eyes” (with bright orange centers) that are easy to see against the bright-colored background, even at longer ranges.

Off-center deer vitals:Practice for hunting with the deer vitals on the back of Hurricane Bag Targets. For longer target life, the vitals are positioned off-center so they don’t line up with aiming points on the target front.

Tri-Core Technology: Hurricane’s proprietary design gives you outstanding target performance.

Heavy-duty handle: A strap handle makes Hurricane easy to carry.
